illustration friday (prehistoric)


The Japanese Giant Salamander (Andrias japonicus), which grows to be over 5 feet long and can live for as long as 80 years in the wild, is considered a "living fossil." They say its skeletal structure is almost identical to fossils from 30 million years ago, but it is now threatened by pollution and habitat loss. It isn't the prettiest creature in the world, but it is quite fascinating. I saw one in a national wilderness area in central Japan many, many years ago.

  10. Oh...this is wonderful! We have solid-colored red/orange newts here in Northern California (a similar creature? but only six or eight inches long) and although they are indeed strange, they are also adorable. I LOVE the way they walk! Poisonous though, there's a story of gold miners who died because one crawled into their coffee pot overnight, and they didn't know it when they were drinking their (last) cup of hot coffee in the morning...
